Poor Feeding on 9600 Wheat Header

Ive got a 9600 with a 930r header. I went to cut a small patch of wheat a few days ago and had a lot of trouble with it feeding into the feeder house. Its almost like it cant get it all under the auger so it starts coming over the top and well that makes a mess. A few times I noticed dirt piled up under the auger right in front of the feeder house. Even when I cleaned it out it didn't really feed any better. I assume this dirt is from me bumping the ground with the header. Ive been very careful as Ive only run a combine a half dozen times and am still learning. Its very different from a cotton stripper LOL I dont know how you guys cut soybeans like that. This wheat I was cutting was probably 5-10bpa (just cutting it for some seed), and very short probably 8 in tall at the shortest. The stand was very thin and uneven. My question is why was it bunching up right in front and then starting to pitch wheat over the top of the auger and onto the reel? Also when it started to pile up right there in front it would start to not cut the heads right under the combine. I checked the sickles all my blades are there not broken and sharp enough to cut my finger. I would appreciate a little advice. Was there just not enough for it to get a good mat to feed? Is something wrong with the feeder house that makes it not take it in? Is there some magical adjustment that will solve all this? TIA John Smith

I run Red combines but I think it is universal. Can you adjust the position of your front drum so the chain is closer to the floor so it grabs the wheat? Could also be that your chain is wore out and not grabbing the wheat. Good luck. I figured all the wheat in Texas was cut by now. We get a rain about every 3-4 days and cool temps. Should be cutting by now but the forecast is calling for more rain Friday. We may try some today. DC wheat is still a little green. Brian Barinsky

Check the drum height adjustment on the feederhouse.......i'm not sure which position it needs to be on (up or down). Read the book and adjust accordingly......Good Luck Mike Shimek

I probably should not be answering this, because it's been 20 years or so, since I have combined anything. But, here goes. We always cut just below the head of the crop we were harvesting, reason being, less wear on the machine internals from running all that straw through, and better separation. And what you posted as your problem.

If we were going to bale the straw, we would just run a haybine over it. Keep in mind, most of our fields less than 100 acres.

You might have to add a link to your feeder chain to get it closer to the auger untill stuff shines up.Im betting it is shortend quite a bit, and cant reach the wheat under the auger. DevinF

If its wrapping around the auger you need to adjust the distance between the auger and stripper plates on the head. I don't remember the spec but it should be in the book.

Any crop 8" and shorter is going to be difficult to harvest.

There are two different feeder house chains. Wide slat and narrow slat. Narrow won't work worth a darn in wheat. I will bet you have narrow. Will be worth the time and money to change it. redoak

It sounds like your problem is with the head not the combine, after you get a few acres in it and it gets shined up and it still does it, i would adjust stripper plates and auger height on the head, I don't know exactly what they should be by the book (Im thinking it is like 1/8") but I like the auger and stripper bars to be as close as possible without touching, if there is much of a gap it will allow the auger to bring the crop around with it. For the cutting issue-- make sure your sickle hold downs are keeping the sections against the guards but if straw is piling up there from you feeding problems or just a lack of material to push it off of the sickle then your only option is really trying to get the reel to push it in or you have to stop,lift way up, backup fast and try to "throw" the material back off the cutting platform into the auger. Basically your thin stand isnt strong enough to push the material that is on the sickle back and it just bends over instead of going between the guards and getting cut. Also those 930 heads (we had 930F) had alot of trouble on the ends of bunching up then pulling that wad in causing some slug feeding that would make it throw it over the auger by the feeederhouse. so keep an eye on that too. If there is rust on head/ feeder house throat, a few minutes with a wire wheel on a angle grinder saves a lot of aggravation. frseed

Grind the rounded edge off the platform auger. Wear rounds the edge and it will not grab the crop for even feeding. We used to do that yearly when the heads got some age. iafarmerken

What everybody above said and I'll add that the dirt is a problem and you need to keep it off the head. It can make a big difference in feeding if you have a pile under the auger in front of the feeder house.

didnt he say the wheat is rapping around the auger because its acting like it wont go into the combine?

the drum should be on low, and i would bet dollars to donuts that the feeder house is in low speed, put it in high speed were it needs to be and problem will be fixed.

Thanks for all the replys! Yes the head was a little rusty but it shined up very quickly. I cut some 50 bu wheat with it last year and didn't have any trouble, and also some 4000 lb milo. The little stripper plates were out of adjustment hadn't fixed them yet. The edge of the auger is a little rounded, I'm missing the very outside right finger on the auger. I haven't checked what postition the drum is in yet and weather it is all the way forward. The next thing I will cut will be milo. What settings does everything need to be in?
